Sunday, October 23, 2005 (Mau):

Police in Uttar Pradesh today raided three places in search for the controversial MLA Mukhtar Ansari.

Ansari, an independent MLA was seen defying curfew, travelling in a vehicle with armed men during the recent riots in Mau in UP.

Then Jitendra Yadav, the brother of a riot victim, allegedly named Ansari in an FIR. The police said they would arrest Ansari, but then Jitendra denied he ever named Ansari.

"My brother was shot dead on October 14. We could not lodge an FIR because of the curfew," Yadav said.

"The police came to our place on October 17. They asked us if we knew who was responsible for the murder," he added.

"They also asked us if Mukhtar Ansari was there. We told him that we saw him. The police then took our signatures," Yadav said.

But the police insist that the FIR was filed against Ansari on October 15.

"The FIR is of October 15. We are investigating into it," said Sujit Pandey, SSP, Mau.

Meanwhile, the situation in the town continues to be tense and there have been some incidents of violence despite the curfew.
